What Are Transplantation Procedures?

Whole pancreas transplants have helped to prevent further kidney damage, and long-term studies are finding that they may even reverse existing damage after many years. Diabetic neuropathy improves, but not retinopathy. Double transplants of pancreases and kidneys are also proving to have a good long-term success rate for selected type 1 patents.

One ten-year study reported that survival rate at 10 years was 76.3%, and two thirds of the patients had both pancreas and kidney function. Drugs are needed after transplantation procedures to suppress the immune system so that it doesn't reject these foreign organs. Side effects of these drugs can be severe.
